Aims

The main goal of the placement is that students gain knowledge and skills in somatic nursing and care. More specifically, students will focus how to promote clients' preferences in the shaping of services. Focus is also upon developing the ability to separate one's personal values from professonal and social values, and to be able to identify conflicting values and ethical dilemmas in practical social and health work both at the individual level, between groups and in society as a whole. Students will experience having to reflect on ethical issues and they will practice their ability to be ethically responsible in their interventions. Students will also be familiar with the health- and social services regarding organisation, the various levels of administration, user relations, and the extent of multi-professional and multi-agency work. Students practice their writing skills, and they work with questions of law within the field of the social educator.

Contents

One eleven weeks placement nursing and caring for disabled and elderly people.

During the placement student will:

·practice and develop competence, skills and attitudes in collaboration with clients and supervised by professional placement mentors

·acquire practical knowledge gained from working with experienced professionals

·experience and gain knowledge of the planning and implementation of social educational work

·practice the ability to identify conflicting values and ehtical dilemmas

·practice the skill of meking ethical assessments and how to make ehtically sound interventions

·reflect on, evaluate and to discuss ethics and professional conduct

·practice critical self-evaluation

·acquire knowledge of living standards show solidarity towards people in a vulnarable situations promoting their interests and rights

·identify and focus the clients' resources

·gain experience which may be useful for the university college and may promote further learning

Teaching Methods

Placement with supervision. Written assignments. Seminars, groups, oral presentations.

Work Experience Placement

Eleven weeks user-related placement, including a pre-placement practice seminar and a post-practice gathering at the university college. During the placement students submit five individually written assignments:

  • learning agreement
  • practice report
  • ethical dilemma
  • optional literature
  • measures plan

Student receive financial support which partly covers expenses related to the practice period.

Course Requirements

Participation in classes at the university college:

  • pre-placement seminar
  • post-placement seminar

Written assignments, assesed by the university college:

  • One plan of person-centred measures. One written feed-back.
Assessment

Assessment of the placement will be based on:

Knowledge, skills and attitudes related to:

  • Observation
  • Hygiene
  • Procedures
  • The administering of drugs
  • Preventive health care work
  • Communication with next of kin
  • General professional skills
  • Individual professional skills
  • Written journals, case papers and reports, and the use of relevant theoretical knowledge.

Personal presence

  • The practice period is compulsory. Abscence without leave is not accepted. The practice period includes two seminars at the university college.
  • The maximum abscence permitted is eight days. If this is exceeded a special agreement with the university college and the placement is necessary, including how the student may compencate.

Professional rules and regulations

Students are expected to oblige to the general rules of the professional worker.

APPROVAL
The placement mentor recommends wether the the placement is approved or rejected. The final decision lies with the university college.

IF APPROVAL IS IN DOUBT
"The assessment is a continuous process which runs through the whole placement period. If doubt emerges whether the student will be able to succeed, he will receive a written warning half way through the period or three weeks before the completion of the placement at the latest. The warning will underline the reasons for doubt, and will state which demands the student must fulfill in order to pass his placement period. If by the end of the placement the student without reasonable doubt still does not comply with the demands stated, his placement may still be assessed as not passed even if a warning has not been issued beforehand."
